Xiaomi has broken the boundaries of smartphone cameras with its latest flagship, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, which features a 1-inch camera sensor. Xiaomi is trying to close the gap between smartphone and camera with a phone-camera hybrid in their latest post.
In a Chinese social media post, Weibo, Xiaomi shows a glimpse of the project they are currently working on, namely turning the Xiaomi 12S Ultra into a mirrorless camera.
In this post, you can see the Xiaomi 12S Ultra attached with a Leica lens, more precisely the M Series.
The 1-inch sensor is not covered with a lens as usual but is covered with glass if the lens is not attached. A Leica external lens is then attached and turns the phone into a camera. Meanwhile other cameras such as ultrawide can be used as usual.
Xiaomi explains that there are additional applications that support professional photography, such as focus peaking, zebra lines, histograms, 10-bit RAW, and more.
External camera devices are actually common. But the problem is, transferring images from an external camera lens to a cellphone camera often reduces image quality. The Xiaomi 12S Ultra Concept is the first with an external lens directly connected to the camera sensor. External devices like this solve one of the biggest problems with smartphone cameras, namely the optical zoom.
Besides being supported by Leica lenses, there is Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 which maximizes computing which certainly processes images to be more beautiful. Most likely this device is not for sale.
