The Washington Nationals and pitcher Brad Lidge agreed on a 1-year deal worth $1 million.

The closer who recently spent four seasons closing for the Philadelphia Phillies battled injuries in his last two seasons as he only pitched in 50 and 25 games in 2010 and 2011 respectively. His first season with the Phillies was one to rememeber as he was 48 for 48 in save opportunities inlcuding the postseason as the team also won the World Series.

This has been a busy offseason for the Nationals as they traded for pitcher Gio Gonzalez from the Oakland A's, were in the running for either top flight free agents and had to deal with the kidnapping of starting catcher Wilson Ramos who was rescued by Venezuelan commandos.

Nationals GM Mike Rizzo told CSNWashington.com "They say his shoulder is strong. He's healthy. He feels great. He's in great shape and coming in here with a great attitude and ready to prove to the baseball world he's got a lot left in the tank and he's ready to help us win games." That was in reference to Lidge's shoulder which has been a source of concern for the 35-year-old over the past couple of years.

The 2-time All-Star also played for the Houston Astros and has a career record of 26-31 with an era of 3.44 and 223 saves.

The Phillies signed free agnet closer Jonathan Papelbon which made former relievers Ryan Madson (Cincinnati Reds) and Lidge expendable.

From The Sports Mind Of RB:
The Nationals are quietly putting together a pretty decent team and the NL East and NL better get ready. They may not start winning games this season but they are going to be a lot more competitive.
