The Detroit Tigers and Prince Fielder have come to terms on a 9-year $214 million deal.
Fielder had spent most of the offseason watching other big names such as Albert Pujols(LAA), Jose Reyes(Miami Marlins), and Yu Darvish(Texas Rangers) sign lucrative deals before his suitor finally came.
Fielder played all his seven seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers and led them to the NL Central title this past season which was their first in 29 years.
The loss of Fielder coupled with the strong possiblity NL MVP Ryan Braun will face a 50-game suspension for testing positive for peformance enhancing drugs seriously hurts the Brewers playoff hopes for the upcoming season.
The 3-time All-Star will fill a much needed void for the Tigers as they will probably be without the services of DH Victor Martinez for much of the 2012 campaign. He will also form a potent 1-2 punch in the middle of the lineup with Miguel Cabrera. They hit 34 homeruns, 112 rbi's and hit .319 between the two of them.
The Tigers hope this move will get them over the hump and improve their AL Central title and ALCS appearance from last season.
Fielder's contract ranks fourth all-time in MLB history behind Alex Rodriguez's two deals and Albert Pujols' latest deal.
From The Sports Mind Of RB:
Do I think Prince Fielder is a 9-year $214 million player? No I do not but the Tigers do and those are the only people it matters to. I just wonder where are they going to play him since Cabrera plays first base already? They can't expect him to be a DH for the entire contract but maybe that is where he will end up so why not start now. Those Brewers fans must be praying it won't take another 29 years to win another NL Central title.
