Schiano Heading South For The Winter

In a surprise move ESPN reports the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have hired head coach Greg Schiano of the Rutgers Scarlet Knights to the same position. The two sides are currently working on a 5-year deal.

The Buccaneers just fired coach Raheem Morris who went 17-31 in his three seasons and had one playoff berth.

Schiano follows a trend of coaches making the jump from the collegiate ranks to the pros. The recent coaches are Pete Carroll who left USC for the Seattle Seahawks and Jim Harbaugh who left Stanford for the San Francisco 49ers.

After taking over the Ruters program in 2000 Schiano turned around a non-existent program into competitive team. Not only athletically but academically moving from the middle of the pack to the top of the academic progress reports.

The former Miami and Penn State assistant coach's overall record at the school was 68-67 but his biggest impact was changing the culture. Not many coaches wanted to coach there and high school football players around the country especially from the area did not have Rutgers high on their list if they had it at all.

Rutgers alum and former New York Giants center Sean O'Hara said on SNY that this will definitely affect the remaining players at the school and that Schiano has done a lot of great things at the university.

Under Schiano the Scarlet Knights were 5-1 in bowl games with the most recent win coming at the Pinstripe Bowl against the Iowa State Cyclones.

From The Sports Mind Of RB:
I just didn't think Schiano would ever leave the school. He had opportunities to interview for positions at Miami and Michigan but passed on them to stay. As I was told today he had probably done everything he could at Rutgers and probably needed a new challenge.
