The St. Louis Cardinals and catcher Yadier Molina have agreed on a 5-year $75 million contract extension on Thursday. The deal makes Molina the second highest paid catcher in the game behind the Minnesota Twins' Joe Mauer.

Since being drafted in the 4th round back in 2000 Molina has been considered one of the best catchers in the game. He has won four consecutive gold gloves and has been named to the National League All-Star team three times as well.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports Molina saying “I grew up here, I feel good here, it was my first choice to stay here.”

The Cardinals, who lost slugger Albert Pujols to the LAA Angels earlier in the off-season hope the younger of the Molina brothers (Jose and Bengie) will provide more veteran leadership and improve his numbers from last season with a batting average of .305, 14 home runs and 32 doubles.

Molina, who will turn 30 in July, was an integral part of the Cardinals World Series victories in 2006 and last season.

The deal could keep him in red and white until 2017 and then a mutual $15 million option can be exercised for the 2018 season.
