The Oakland A's have sent closer Andrew Bailey and outfielder Ryan Sweeney to the Boston Red Sox for outfielder Josh Reddick and two prospects.
The 27-year-old Bailey is still three more seasons away from free agency which made this move so enticing for the Red Sox. He has saved 75 games for the A's over the past three seasons but his best year was in '09 in which he had 26 saves in 83.1 innings pitched with an era of 1.84.
The Red Sox have revamped their bullpen with the departure of former closer Jonathan Papelbon who signed a multi-year deal with the Philadelphia Phillies earlier in the free agency period. To go with Bailey they also acquired reliever Mark Melancon from the Houston Astros.
The A's seem to be gearing up for another rebuilding era as they also traded pitchers Trevor Cahill and Gio Gonzalez in the past couple of weeks.
From The Sports Mind Of RB:
Why would the A's trade young pitchers who they have under there control for the next couple of seasons? I thought inexpensive and good pitchers were something to build a team around but that's why I write a blog and general mangers are in the position they are in.
