Record Setting Night In The Big Easy

The Atlanta Falcons came into the game Monday night looking to keep pace with the New Orleans Saints for a shot at the NFC South crown. The Saints offense however proved to be too potent as they dismantled the "dirty birds."

The Saints trailed once in the first quarter of their 45-16 thrashing as quarterback Drew Brees threw for 307 yards and four touchdowns. In the process surpassing Hall of Famer Dan Marino's mark for total yards thrown in a season of 5,084. Brees now is at 5,087 yards with one more game to go on the schedule.

Brees has been instrumental in turning around not only the franchise with his arrival but also the city after the destruction of Hurricane Irene. Many believed the winning of Super Bowl XLIV over the Indianapolis Colts was a start for many in the city to help take their minds off of the aftermath left behind. Brees and his wife created the Drew Brees Dream Foundation in 2003 and the misson statement is about "Advancing research in the fight against cancer and providing care, education and opportunities for children and families." Since introducing it in San Diego he has also implemented it in New Orleans as a way to help families and those in need.

The 11-year pro told the Associtaed Press after the game ""Honestly, I was really trying not to think about the record or anything, I knew we were close. A couple guys mentioned stuff to me on the sideline. I didn't want to hear it. It's like a pitcher with a no-hitter, I guess."

The record stood for 27 years but this was not the first time the Super Bowl MVP took a shot at it. During the team's 2008 season he just fell short with 5,069 yards. Brees is the only quarterback in NFL history to throw for 5,000 yards in two different seasons and has moved up to ninth all-time list for touchdown passes with 276. New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has a shot at the record this year with 4,897 thrown so far.

At 12-3 the Saints are tied with the San Francisco 49ers for second in the NFC.

Many critrics say the era in which quarterbacks live today is much more passer friendly then it was for those of the 80' and even as late as the mid- 90's. But Marino was having none of that as he congratulated Brees on his twitter account by tweeting "Great job by such a special player."

The five-time Pro Bowler will be a free agent at the end of this season.

From The Sports Mind Of RB:
Big time Miami Dolphins fan and writer of the jadendaly.blogspot.com Jaden Daly said  to me "No hard feelings from me in regard to Drew Brees. He broke the record fair and square... he deserves it." I could not have said it better myself.
