Matt Barkley Has Some Unfinished Business
In a press conference earlier today USC Trojans quarterback Matt Barkley decided to come back for his senior season and put the NFL on hold for one more year.
The junior had arguably his best season throwing for 39 touchdown passes this season compared to the 41 he threw over his first two seaon as a starter. He also increased his compeltion percantage and lowered the amount of interceptions he threw.
The Trojans are in the last year of a postseaon ban which was a result of NCAA infractions stemming from the Reggie Bush and Pete Carroll era. Barkley alluded to that saying "the 2012 team has some serious unfinished business to attend too and I intend to play a part in it...," referring to the players who did not transfer after the penalties were handed down.
The Newport Beach, Califonia native was one of the most heralded recruits to ever step onto a USC campus. Entering as the #1 signal caller in the 2009 class and replacing the likes of Carson Palmer, Matt Leinart and Mark Sanchez including two Hesiman winners made for big buzz at the school.
The Sporting News had projected Barkley as a first-round pick if he decided to leave early. ESPN's Mel Kiper's had him projected as the #6 overall pick in next April's draft.
Out of a possible 25 starters 20 are likely to return next season making the Trojans one of the favorites in the nation and the Pac-12. Those who are not going to be part of next year's team are offensive tackle Matt Khalil and defensive end Nick Perry who could both be taken in the first-round.
From The Sports Mind Of RB:
I am a bit surprised that Barkley decided to come back considering his draft stock was so high and as he said "it's always been my dream to play in the NFL." But with the chance to win a national championship and Heisman still out there this decision was made much easier. I just hope his decision turns out more like Peyton Manning and less like fellow USC alum Matt Leinart
