Former Penn State Coach Joe Paterno Passes Away

Legendary coach Joe Paterno passed away due to complications from lung cancer. He has been at the hospital since January 13.

The 85-year-old Paterno was diagnosed with the disease after being fired last November after questions emerged on his handling of the child molestation allegations against former assistant Jerry Sandusky.

Paterno in an interview with the Washington Post a couple of weeks ago "Joe Pa" as he was called said he had no ill-will towards Penn State University where he had coached for 46 years. He also said that when the Sandusky accusations were brought to his attention he had no idea how to handle it.

The Hall of Fame coach amassed 409 wins and led the Nittany Lions to two national championship games.

The university hired New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien to take over as head coach for the upcoming season.

A candlelight vigil was held on the Penn State campus last night after reports surfaced that Paterno's health was deteriorating. His family was by his bedside in his last hours.

From The Sports Mind Of RB:
It is hard to believe that Paterno did not pass away from a broken heart as someone told me earlier today. Penn State was his life and that was taken away from him. The allegations are serious and his handling of them were flat out horrible but as he said he had no idea how to handle it. I will never forget those Saturdays growing up and watching college football and Joe Pa you were certainly part of it.
