At a press conference earlier today longtime New York Yankees catcher Jorge Posada announced his retirement.

Posada was surrounded by his wife and children after mulling over the decision for the past couple of weeks.

The five-time All-Star played 17 seasons with the Yankees and won five World Series titles. He also hit .273 with 5 Silver Sluggers for the best offensive player at his position and finished in the top ten of MVP voting twice.

Posada said ''I could never wear another uniform and I will forever be a Yankee.'' Posada is referring to starting and finishing his career with the New York Yankees. From that core group of players that won multiple championships that came up through the farm system Bernie Williams (retired), Andy Pettitte (retired) , Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera.

The 40-year-old was known for his fiery temperament which got him into some trouble most recently this past season against the Boston Red Sox during a Sunday night game. He pulled himself out of the lineup because he ws not too pleased with manager Joe Girardi's placement of him in the batting order.

The talk will now focus on Posada's chances of making the Hall Of Fame. Posada hit for a higher average then four catchers currently in the Hall of Fame, more homeruns than 9, more runs batted in than 7 and scored more runs than 6 of those same cathcers.

From The Sports Mind Of RB:
Posada is one of those guys a teammate, manager or coach would want on their team. Was he brash and ill-tempered at times? Yes, but no one could ever question if he cared or played hard. It's amazing to see that the players from that Yankees dynasty are starting to retire now.
