Giants Lasso The Cowboys And The Crown In The Process

The New York Giants came into the season with not many expectations or hopes of making the playoffs. That's not to say the team did not believe in themselves but looking at the circumstances it was not easy.

The Giants defeated the Dallas Cowboys 31-14 to win the NFC East crown and secure their spot in the playoffs. They were able to sweep the season series from the "boys" in what turned out to be two very crucial games.

Heading into the season the defense was ravaged by injuries as at least seven players were either placed on injured reserve or would not play in the team's first game against the Washington Redskins. The defense was ranked 29th in pass yards and 19th in rushing yards per game this season. The offensive line was a work in prgress after the departures of Shaun O'Hara and Rich Seubert. As a direct result the running game was not as good this season as they were dead last in rush yards per game. The receiving core took a hit early when Domenik Hixon went down in the preseason with an ACL injury. Special teams was never the teams strong suit under head coach Tom Coughlin and in preseason it definitely showed.

The team was also plagued by inconsistency after a 6-2 start to the season and an impressive road victory over the New England Patriots the shoe fell off the other foot. They then went 1-5 against the New Orleans Saints, Green Bay Packers, San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles (sans Michael Vick and Jeremy Maclin), Cowboys and the Redskins. This led to speculation that Couglin could be on his way out as coach.

The one bright spot for this team was Eli Manning who at times this season looked like an MVP candidate throwing for almost 5,000 yards and 29 touchdowns.

The Giants now will prepare for the Atlanta Falcons as they come to MetLife Stadium next Sunday.

From The Sports Mind Of RB:
As a Giants fans I will admit I was not expecting much this season because not only did it look like this team was not very good but they did not nake significant offseason moves. As the New York Jets and the Eagles were adding free agents the team's front office did not do much. I wonder where those teams are at this moment? And give credit to them for winning the two games they had to against the Cowboys.
