Two-time Indy 500 winner Dan Wheldon died enroute to a hospital after being involved in a massive car crash at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway today. Wheldon dies two hours after being airlifted by helicopter to a nearby hospital.

Many of the racers had concerns about the high speeds reached on the track which sometimes reached 225 mph during practice. They also said this was one of the worst crashed they had ever witnessed. The race which was canceled will have a five-lap salute in memory of Wheldon. "IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries," IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard said.

The thirty-three year old crashed in on the 13th lap and three other drivers were involved but their injuries don't seem to be as serious. This was going to be the last race of the season.

From The Sports Mind Of RB:
In a sport such as racing crashes are likely to happen. Everyone says safety percussions must be taken but does anybody know what they are? Are adding some form of restrictor plates like NASCAR has done or make safer cars. No matter what is done this unfortunate incident will occur  and just hope it does not happen as often.
