Reds and Padres Make Trade

The San Diego Padres send starting pitcher Mat Latos to the Cincinnati Reds for Edinson Volquez, and four of the top Reds prospects in Yonder Alonso, Anthony Rizzo, Brad Boxberger and Yasmani Grandal.

In three seasons with the Padres the 24-year-old Latos went 27-29 with an era of 3.37. Two seasons ago was his best as he went 14-10 with an era of  2.92 and throwing 184 innings.

The Reds began to get tired of Volquez's act after receiving him in a trade back before the 2008 season in return for Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton. That year he went 17-6  with an era of 3.21 but since he is 13-12 with an era of 4.71 starting 41 out of a total of 90 games.

The Padres who have lost playes such as Jake Peavy and Adrian Gonzalez recently are looking to revamp and build their team with youth and inexpensive players.

The Reds hope Latos can help a staff that was 12th in the NL in terms of era and gave up the second most homeruns last season. Latos will have his work cut out for him because according to ESPN's Park Factors Latos is leaving a pitcher friendly ballpark for one that ranks as one of the best for hitters in all of baseball.

From The Sports Mind Of RB:
This trade makes sense for both sides because the Reds need a starter they can count on and the Padres want to get younger and cheaper quickly. We will just have to wait and see down the line which team really got the better of the deal.
