Causes of Shivering Without Fever

Shivering is the body's natural response when you feel cold or in a low-temperature environment. This condition causes the body's muscles to quickly tighten and relax to generate heat. Generally, chills without fever can be overcome with appropriate treatment according to the cause.

Besides being caused by exposure to cold air, there are several common causes of chills without fever, including:

1. Strenuous physical exercise
Physical activity that is done intensely and for a long time, such as running a marathon, can increase body temperature. This increase in body temperature can cause you to shiver.

2. Emotional reaction
When you're feeling scared and anxious, you may shiver. This reaction occurs due to the release of the hormone dopamine from the brain which can affect your emotional state. This condition is also known as goosebumps.

3. Underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism)
Hypothyroidism is a condition when the thyroid gland is unable to produce enough thyroid hormone to properly regulate the body's metabolism. This condition is characterized by fatigue, constipation, and a slow heart rate.

Hypothyroidism can also cause your body to feel cold or shiver more easily.

If shivering is caused by a nutritional deficiency, this can be overcome by meeting daily nutritional needs, such as protein, carbohydrates, and a variety of vitamins and minerals, including iron and zinc, to maintain a normal body temperature. Your doctor may also prescribe additional nutritional supplements according to your condition.
