Carpenter Signs Two-Year Deal

Chris Carpenter and the Cardinals have agreed on a new two-year deal that will keep Carpenter in St. Louis until 2013.

The deal which is worth $21 million over two years will help to free up money to sign future free agents and the biggest of them all first baseman Albert Pujols.

The former NL Cy Young winner has had to shoulder much of the load this season as his all-star teammate Adam Wainright missed the whole season with Tommy John surgery. Wainright should be ready for Spring Traning next year.

Carpenter has had a shaky year to say the least going 9-9 with an era of 3.75. His last start was very promising as he threw a four-hit shutout against the Milwaukee Brewers, a team his Cardinals are chasing in the NL Central. The Cardinals are also in wild card contention as they are 61/2 games behind the Atlanta Braves.

At 36, Carpenter has had a history of arm issues and stints on the disabled list. However he has not ruled out playing beyond the 2013 season.

From The Sports Mind of RB:
Chris Carpenter still has something left in that right arm and the Cardinals are banking a healthy Wainright with Pujols back can contend in the National League next season. For their sake I hope they re-sign Pujols because that what be devastating to the city and the club.
