Soccer Tuesday

Hey guys… sorry for taking so long… It was just a dull week when it came to club soccer on the pitch… but not quite off it.

Soccer Quiz 101.. what is ‘transfer deadline day’?

All along Europe and the UK there are 2 transfer windows where players can be signed from one club to the other while still on contract with the previous club. Summer window starts from the end of the previous season till the 31st Aug/1st Sept (If 31st is a Sunday). The winter window goes throughout the month of Jan.

So there can be a few types of transfers

1) Regular – When a player is still in contract with a club, the buying club would bid an amount that will let the selling club break the contract and allow the player to leave.

2) Free – If a player is out of contract, a free agent, any club can sign him up. This is more prevalent in US sports than in soccer.

3) Loan: - Most economical and most complex. A player can be loaned to one club by another club due to many reasons. It could be because he is surplus to requirements at his club and he needs more regular first team soccer, he is unhappy at the club but the club doesn’t wanna get rid of him, the two clubs are eyeing the transfer but are not ready financially right now.. the buying club wants the player desperately but cannot pay the players wages.. the list is endless.

These are the main types of player transfers that go around the soccer world during transfer windows…
Thus, Transfer Deadline Day is a chaotic day when the people who have left it till the end are running around for that million dollar signature on that dotted line…
