Center John Tavares and the New York Islanders have agreed to a contract extension. The deal is worth a reported $33 million over six-years a source close to the deal tells ESPN.com.
A press conference is set up Thursday to announce the deal publicly.
Tavares was the Islanders number one pick back in 2009 and had 29 goals with 38 assists last season.
The 21-year-old Tavares was entering the last year of his rookie deal.
From The Sports Mind of RB:
This deal will definitely help the New York Islanders on the ice. The big question is will it help them in Nassau County where they have been trying to get a new arena built? The team has reportedly received offers from other cities including their neighbor to the east Suffolk County. No matter where they play the only way this deal makes sense is if they surround Tavares with better talent.
