It did not take long for the St. Louis Cardinals to find a replacement for retired manager Tony LaRussa. GM John Mozeliak hired former Cardinals catcher Mike Matheny.

Matheny who has no prior managerial experience in the majors or minors has been a special assistant to the player development staff.

During his thirteen year career the four-time gold glove winner was known for his defense and played for four teams in that time span. Drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 31st round back in 1988. A majority of the 42-year-old's time was spent with the Cardinals. He also played in one World Series with the team losing to the Boston Red Sox back in 2004.

The move will be criticized by many for the lack of a search by Mozeliak and is also the first managing hire for him.

Now the front office will look towards bringing back slugger Albert Pujols.

From The Sports Mind Of RB:
It's a bold move but if they bring back Pujols this will be a team of veterans and also defending champions. So Matheny is going to have an easier go of it then most first year skippers.
