Boise St. had their BCS hopes dashed as they lost to the TCU Horned Frogs 36-35 Saturday evening. This is the second year in a row the Broncos have their BCS chances end with a missed field goal.
The Broncos who entered the contest as the #5 team in the country needed to win out and hope the teams in front of them lose due to their lack of schedule strength to make the title game.
The Horned Frogs were able to score a touchdown late but head coach Gary Patterson elected to go for two instead. The team was able to get the two-point conversion and took the lead with about a minute left to go in the game. Quarterback Casey Pachall threw for 473 yards and five touchdowns.
Last season the Broncos were denied a BCS title shot heading into the last game of the season after their place kicker missed field goals in a game against the Nevada Wolfpack which could have won the game.
The Horned Frogs are now 8-2 overall and 5-0 in the conference with the inside track for the Mountain West Conference crown.
Boise St. on the other hand falls to 8-1 and 3-1 in the conference.
According to SBNation.com the loss also opens the door for the Houston Cougars. The Cougars are the highest ranked AQ team in the top 16 currently at #11 and if they finish the season higher than the highest rank Big East team they could play in a BCS bowl game.
AQ or automatic qualifying conference are conferences whose champion receives an automatic birth to a BCS bowl game. Usually referring to the big six conferences Big East, Pac-12, Big 10, ACC, SEC and Big 12.
From The Sports Mind Of RB:
No matter what Boise St. does losing games like these will always give their critics more ammunition to keep them out of the title game. They will always say "If you can't go undefeated in your conference, how can you play with the "big boys" in the major conferences?"
