The #6 Duke Blue Devils defeated the Michigan St. Spartans 74-69 at Madison Sqaure Garden Monday night. With the win head coach Mike Krzyzewski becomes the winningest coach in men's Division I history with 903. He was previoulsy tied with Bob Knight who was sideline as an analyst for ESPN and also his former coach at West Point.
During the broadcast Knight said "I didn't expect Mike to pass me in just four years" referring to his milestone of 900 wins back when he was coach of the Texas Tech Raiders. Knight and Kryzyzewski are the only coaches with 900 wins in men's basketball. In women's college basketball legendary coach Pat Summit has 1000 wins and retired coach Jody Conradt has 900.
Coach K as he is affectionately called coached the Army Black Knights from 1975-1980 going 73-59 with an NIT appearance. At the helm of Duke he has turned a program not known for basketball to a national powerhouse. In his 30 seasons he has taken the team to the NCAA tournammnet 27 times, with four national titles, 79 postseason winsand averaging about 25 wins a season. He hs also been Coach of The Year and ACC Coach of the Year five times.
It did not start so well for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee as he won only 38 games in his first three seasons and said he was thankful the school was able to stick behind him during those tough times.
His peers have only the upmost respect for him as coach Tom Izzo said after the loss "I thanked Mike for what he's done for college basketball." Head coach of the California Golden Bears Mike Montgomery who underwent surgery in October for bladder cancer said on ESPN 2 "What he has done is tremendous and all programs look to emulate his."
The game was well in hand for the Blue Devils but they could not put away the Spartans who made a comeback late but came up short.
Andre Dawkins of the Blue Devils was the leading scorer for the game with 26 points.
From The Sports Mind Of RB:
Coach K is an amazing coach. His critics might get on him because most of his players don't translate to the NBA but many of his players make it in the game of life. Wins are always important but what he teaches is important as well. I sound like those NCAA student athlete commercials.
