2011 US Open Champion Rory McIlroy

With all the drama taken out of the US Open heading into the weekend, the question became not would Rory McIlroy win but how much will he dominate the rest of the field. After being awarded the trophy we would later find out he had reached heights only few golfers had done before him.

Let's rewind back two months ago when McIlroy headed into the final round of the Masters with a four shot lead but imploded to give away a chance to don the coveted "green jacket." Many golf analyst and fans alike even wondered could this twenty-two-year old overcome such a crushing and public meltdown? Right after his final round was over McIlroy in an interview with NBC said "this will be a character building moment and one that will make him stronger."

As the young phenom made his way towards US Open immortality he decided to rewrite the record books in an impressive way. Becoming the youngest US Open winner in 88 years, the youngest major winner since Tiger Woods won the Masters in 1997 and the largest margin of strokes to win a major at 8 strokes since Woods won the British Open back in 2000.

With his performance many have been quick to compare him to another young golfer on the verge of greatness, the aforementioned Tiger Woods. Whether that comes to fruition remains to be true. But for the time being let us stand back and congratulate Rory McIlroy on his US Open victory.
