Chris Drury has announced his retirement from the NHL today, ending his twelve-year career.
Drury played for the Colorado Avalanche, Calgary Flames, Buffalo Sabres and the New York Rangers. Drury signed a five-year deal with the Rangers at the start of the 2007-2008 season but struggled with injuries and poor play. He spent three of those four season as captain before the team bought out his contract this past June.
In 892 NHL games he had 255 goals and 615 points. He also was a three time Olympian and won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league's top rookie back in 1999.
From the Sports Mind of RB:
When Drury came over to the Rangers form Buffalo and Scott Gomez was signed away from the hated New Jersey Devils, most fans were happy to stick it to the Devils and also thought this pairing with Jaromir Jagr at the time would be a good fit. For some reason it did not work and the Rangers were left with two big contracts from under performing players. Drury was probably forced into retirement because of his left knee injury. As a fan I always wanted to seem him do well but for some reason that never came and the Rangers did the right thing by moving on.
