There were MLB offseason signings which have not panned out as teams, fans and players would have liked them too. So not even a month into the seson we will view some of the signings which have gotten of to bad starts.
The Washington Nationals signed outfielder Jayson Werth to a 7yrs/126 million dollar contract.
Werth was a big part of the Philadeplphia Phillies team that won the last three straight NL East Championships. Werth is a major piece for a Nationals team that is looking towards the future with players such as Ryan Zimmerman, Drew Storen, Ian Desmond and even Stephen Strausburg, who is missing the entire 2011 season due to Tommy John Surgery. Up to this point Werth is hitting .196 with two homeruns and two rbis.
The Boston Red Sox probably had the biggest offseason of all after trading for first baseman Adrian Gonzalez from the San Diego Padres and signing OF Carl Crawford from division rival the Tampa Bay Rays. The Red Sox after missing out on the playoffs last season were hoping these two pieces would help make them the favorites in the AL this season. Gonzalez, who just signed a 7ys/154 million dollar contract extension is hitting .244 with two homeruns and seven rbis. Crawford signed a lucrative 7yrs/142 million dollar contract is hitting .137 with one rbi and no homeruns. To be fair hitting homeruns was never a big part of Crawford's game but after being benched before today's game against the Toronto Blue Jays this signing is not what both sides expected.
The New York Yankees resigned shortstop Derek Jeter to a 3yrs/51 million dollar deal and after those negotiations even Jeter said it was not handled the way he would have liked. Jeter hit a career low last season .270 compared to his career average of .314 and has critics questioning whether a 37 year old shortstop is still a viable option in any lineup, even for a perennial all-star such as himself. Mr. November as he is sometimes referred to is hitting .255 with no homeruns and three rbis. As I said with Crawford homeruns are not a major part of Jeter's arsenal.
As the season progresses these players will look to change their fortunes and return to their regular form.
