Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora will miss three to four weeks after having arthroscopic knee surgery this morning. Yet some close to the situation tell ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter "it could be even longer."

Umenyiora who just started practicing this past Monday after being cleared to play by doctors after holding out due to contract negotiations and also the sore knee.

Umenyiora said he felt swelling in the knee after practicing for three days straight.

In an interview with ESPN.com General manger Jerry Reese said he spoke to Umenyiora yesterday who told him he would rather get the surgery now rather than later in the season.

The Giants will presumably stick with second year pro Jason Pierre-Paul at the position until Umenyiora gets back.

Umenyiora has two years left on his deal worth $7.1 million.

From the Sports Mind of RB:

This is a bad break for Umenyiora and he knows it. Having surgery now is smart because not only does it allow him to play during the crucial part of the season if the Giants are still alive for the playoffs, he is won't aggravate an injury that could get much worse and he is looking towards his future. On the other hand if Pierre-Paul plays the way he did against the Titans in the Giants opener the writing might already be on the wall for Umenyiora when he gets back.
