Giants Upend the Bears 41-13

The New York Giants looked a lot better in their second preseason game against the Chicago Bears.

Eli Manning played only three series' going 8-16 with 78 yards and got two field goals and a touchdown on those drives. Still reminiscent of last year the receivers for the Giants had a case of the drops as passes either went through the hands of targets or went off their fingers. David Carr did very well as he moved the team down the field after replacing Manning late in the first half, even throwing a fade pattern to Dominik Hixon in the corner of the end zone. The running back tandem of Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw looked good as Jacobs had a twenty-yard touchdown run and Bradshaw had a screen pass that set up that run. Hakeem Nicks did not make much noise but Victor Cruz who cauight a pass on fourth and four set up a field goal.

Special teams saw a major improvement with kick returner Devin Thomas providing the spark with major returns in the first half with one setting up a field goal from Rhys Lloyd who is filling in for the injured Jason Tynes. The coverage team still has some work to do but to be fair they were playing one of the top teams in starting field position in the league. They even came up with a block punt that led to a touchdown.

The defense played well overall showing a bend but not break mentality. They allowed the Bears first team offense to move the ball but did not allow them to score except for a couple of field goals.

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler had flashes of brillance but still made plays that would leave head coach Lovie Smith and offensive coordinator Mike Martz scratching their heads. On one specific play in the second quarter he decided to take a sack instead of throwing the football away. Cutler went 12-21 for 170 yards. The Bears offense was not able to capatilize on the good field position special teams was able to give them, only coming away with two field goals.

The defense was shredded like swiss cheese all night. Whether the Giants threw the football or ran it the Bears could do nothing to stop them.

Injury Report: New York Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas is out for the season after tearing his ACL.

From the Sports Mind of RB:

The Giants showed that last week's game against the Carolina Panthers was somewhat of a fluke. The team still has to work the receivers into the game more but they have to stop dropping passes. The offensive line looked better as they created openings for Bradshaw and Jacobs to run through. A nice touch was former Boston College standout Mark Herzlich who was diagnosed with cancer during his senior year, not only got into the game but also had an interception that stopped a Bear drive on the Giants 2-yard line.

The Bears who went to the NFC Championship game last year need to work on somethings this year. The offesnive line and the receiving corp need work but with Jay Cutler as qb and Mike Martz as the wizard who makes it go they, will be interesting.
